Basics of Jatropha curcas
Jatropha curcas is recognized around the world as an important feedstock for producing biodiesel which has the potential to replace or complement imported fossil diesel. Moreover, it is claimed to enhance socioeconomic development, while reclaiming marginal and degraded lands in (semi-)arid regions, without competing with food production or depleting natural carbon stocks and ecosystem services. Nevertheless, the full potential of this crop has not been realized yet. Thus, there is a need to expand and integrate the knowledge base and the experiences with the performance of different J. curcas provenances in different environments, agronomic practices and crop managements. JatroMed project is aiming to cover this gap under the pedo-climatic and socio-economic conditions of Egypt, Morocco and Algeria.
